چکیده

In this work, targeting, e.g., future generation cellular, microwave-links, or optical fiber systems, we propose a new geometric shaping design for golden angle modulation (GAM) based on a (double) truncated Gaussian input distribution. The design improves the mutual information (MI), and the peak-toaverage power ratio, over the full signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range relative to two key GAM schemes introduced in [1], [2]. Inspired by the proposed geometric shaping, a simpler, SNR-dependent, design is also suggested. The performance is numerically evaluated with respect to MI and compared with classical modulation schemes. With the proposed design, the SNR can be decreased relative to classical quadrature amplitude modulation, even for relatively modest target spectral efficiencies. As the GAM design can approach the Gaussian channel capacity, the power/energy efficiency is expected to improve.

Achieving AWGN Channel Capacity with Sparse Graph Modulation and "In the Air" Coupling

Communication over a multiple access channel is considered. Each user modulates his signal as a superposition of redundant data streams where interconnection of data bits can be represented by means of a sparse graph. The receiver observes a signal resulting from the coupling of the sparse modulation graphs. Iterative interference cancellation decoding is analyzed. It is proved that spatial gra...

On Deterministic Models for Gaussian Networks

In this thesis we study wireless networks modeled by the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) model. The AWGN capacity region of most network topologies is unknown, which means that the optimal transmission scheme is unknown as well. This motivates the search for capacity approximations and for approximately optimal schemes. Deterministic channel models have been proposed as means to approximat...

Approaching Waterfilling Capacity of Parallel Channels by Higher Order Modulation and Probabilistic Amplitude Shaping

Parallel, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with an average sum power constraint are considered. It is shown how the waterfilling Shannon capacity can be approached by higher order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). This is achieved by a new distribution matching approach called product distribution matching (PDM). The asymptotic performance of PDM is analyzed by ...

Analog Codes on Graphs

There are many examples of channels for which a combined coding and modulation scheme is needed to approach capacity. In some cases, it is desirable to employ codes which result in a graceful degradation of information rate with decreasing SNR[2, 3, 4]. It is also known that in some applications like Broadcast channels[1], it is impossible to achieve capacity if source and channel coding are se...

Golden Angle Modulation: Geometric- and Probabilistic-shaping

Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), deployed in billions of communication devises, exhibits a shaping-loss of πe/6 (≈ 1.53 dB) compared to the Shannon-Hartley theorem. With inspiration gained from special (leaf, flower petal, and seed) packing arrangements (so called spiral phyllotaxis) found among plants, we have designed a shape-versatile, circular symmetric, modulation scheme, the Golden ...
